Poll: Florida Governor DeSantis Far More Popular Than The Media

By Rod Thomson

A new poll has found that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is enjoying overwhelming public approval among Floridians regarding his year-long handling of Covid and the vaccine distribution. The media? Not so much.

Cygnal, a less well-known firm that the New York Times called the most accurate polling firm in 2018 and which had the highest number of correct Congressional projections in 2020, conducted a survey of 800 likely general election voters in Florida. Considering the unrelenting, Democrat-operative attack media in Florida and nationally over the past year, the results are stunning.

The statewide Cygnal survey conducted April 8-11, 2021, shows that DeSantis is viewed favorably by a substantial number of likely voters. He is +17 among uninformed voters but +25 among informed voters. So the more a voter knows the issues, the more likely that they approve of the Governor. (I suspect this dynamic of more issue knowledge translating into higher approval is true of Republicans in general.) But even casual voters give him strong approval. Meanwhile, the poll found that the mainstream media has a negative approval rating of -14.

DeSantis’ handling of the Covid virus has even higher approval among Floridians than President Biden’s handling — 60 percent for DeSantis and 58 percent for Biden, while former President Trump’s stood at 49 percent.

A whopping 72 percent of Florida voters in the poll said they approve of the state’s vaccine distribution. Seventy-four percent of voters said they approve of DeSantis’ decision to prioritize the elderly and vaccinate seniors first; 72 percent approve of making Florida one of the first states where anyone over 18 can get a vaccine; and 58 percent approve of keeping the economy open throughout the year of Covid when most states locked down for a short or long period.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

The last one was one of his most controversial decisions, and one the media slammed him on repeatedly. Likely a poll six months ago would not have been as positive, but the data is incontrovertible now and Florida voters see it, even if the media is reluctant.

As someone who firsthand watches the Florida media savage Gov. DeSantis in blatantly unfair, opposition operative ways — 60 Minutes is hardly alone in that respect, they just got nailed because of the video and a couple of brave Democrats stepping up to call them out — it is particularly heartening to see how many Floridians distrust the media and rightly approve of the DeSantis decisions that the media assailed.

The survey has a margin of error of 3.46 percent.

Never Repeat The Past Year: Shutdowns Don’t Work, Only Freedom Does

By Rod Thomson

Looking back on the past year of pandemic, there are two significant lessons that Americans must learn, or re-learn. I hold little hope for politicians and the vested ruling class, but I do for Americans.

First, the lockdowns didn’t work, even CNN has admitted it in a surprisingly positive story about how Governor DeSantis got it right. But we’ve known for a century they would not be effective against an airborne virus.

Pathogens have always been a part of life on earth. For the past century, America at least understood that viruses have to be dealt with by individuals through their patient-doctor relationship. Yes, there would be deaths, but as has become excruciatingly clear now, even the most tightly shutdown states — providing for an A/B comparison with those that did not shutdown — show no fewer deaths. More in some cases.

Because viruses kill the weak. It was accepted public health policy since the 1918 pandemic that the social and economic trade off, if there was any, was far worse shutting down than individual mitigation. We tried then, in a few instances, and they failed. State coercion against diseases has a terrible track record of success.

And we knew this and followed it.

In the  pandemic of 1957-58 — in which cases and deaths were measured very differently from the almost absurdly broad way we have jacked up Covid case and death counts — health officials declared: ‘‘…there is no practical advantage in the closing of schools or the curtailment of public gatherings as it relates to the spread of this disease.’’ This was followed again in 1968-69, by another airborne virus measured very differently. And in smaller outbreaks since. Do we know more now? Not on this front.

But a year ago, with social media and instant photos of Wuhan on our phones, people dropping dead in the street (well, one person captured on camera) and Chinese Communist police dragging people out of their homes, there was an instant panic. That panic was driven by access to information without any context, history or knowledge of the broad picture.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

People were terrified when northern Italy was hit and politicians responded to calm those fears. But instead, they stoked them. And those whose worldview favored heavy government control of people’s lives, for their own good of course, jumped into action. Shutdowns, mandates, micromanaging every bit of a citizens’ life.

In the end, it was all to no effect on the virus, but tragically destructive of lives from children in school to the elderly who were depressingly isolated in their old age. With CNN giving it up, virtually no one seriously continues to defend the lockdowns. A few weeks was forgivable as fearful ignorance. A full year? More like criminal, if there was a definable crime against destroying millions of peoples lives.

But second, and truly more important, even if lockdowns did work — and again, they don’t — the trade off for the loss of human rights, self-worth, finances, hope, education, social interaction, spiritual, emotional and mental stability, health care for a range of other fatal ailments such as cancer and heart disease, are not worth it. Not remotely.

The broad well-being of a community, a state and a nation must be weighed against the threat of one pathogen. Or more. This is incredibly important because there will be more pathogens. Ever more. And it is not at all clear to me that our ruling elite have actually learned from this. I fear they will just calculate political mistakes, always calculating for themselves, but not see the error of once again stripping away American rights for the next disease.

Coronalessons cover

The one thing that is broadly associated with America and her historic successes, her status as a beacon to the world, has been honoring freedom, a free people in a free society producing the highest level of human rights and dignity, to say nothing of extraordinary economic expansion and quality of life.

For the sake of our children’s freedoms, their social and economic functioning, their basic human rights, we average Americans must learn that disease mitigation can never again be given over to politicians with suspect motives and the wrong qualifications.

It must be left up to Americans to freely make decisions in consultation with their own medical providers, for their own good. Our ruling class and those who put their trust in them may not be comfortable with that, but the rest of us Americans must demand it.

More will be lost than any virus could manage if we don’t.

The Media, Democrats And Social Media Teaming To Damage Ron DeSantis

By Rod Thomson

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has gained tremendous popularity among conservatives nationwide with his deft handling of the COVID pandemic, personal freedoms, open-for-business attitude and almost Trumpian willingness to fight against the establishment and elitist wisdom but with a Harvard-trained communications ability.

As such, he has been under relentless attack by the Democrat media, seen most obviously when comparing the attack dog media coverage of DeSantis to the lap dog media coverage of New York Gov. Andrew Coumo — a governor that has done a much worse job by every single measurement.

But as DeSantis ramps up for his 2022 re-election campaign, and perhaps eyeing a 2024 run for the White House, the media has become that special combination of hilarious, jaw-dropping and nauseating. The past few days have been a perfect example.

With Florida’s large elderly population, and the elderly by far the most vulnerable to the virus, DeSantis has targeted the 65 and older crowd, along with health care workers, as the top priority.

He’s done it in partnership with hundreds of Publix pharmacies and other pharmacies around the state, state-run distribution sites and unique three-day pop-up clinics to pinpoint smaller areas being missed. These pop-up clinics are aimed at elderly communities with high demand but lower saturation of vaccines. This is actually quite brilliant management, and has been held at mobile home parks, minority communities, The Villages, and so on. DeSantis goes to nearly every one, spreading the word. And it’s smart politics.

Well Tuesday, a pop-up clinic was held in Lakewood Ranch in Manatee County, just another of more than a dozen held without much media comment — until the media attack dogs found an angle to go after DeSantis, and the salivating howling began.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

The Bradenton Herald, knowing the demographic makeup of Lakewood Ranch, ran the first story under the headline: “More COVID vaccine coming to Manatee. Only residents of these two zip codes can get it” Well, yes. That’s because they are aimed at specific communities.

The second attack dog, the Orlando Sentinel, picked up the assault, running the specific racial demographics for the zip codes. The result?

Headline: “DeSantis defends his choice of wealthy senior community for pop-up vaccine site”

Lead: A testy Gov. Ron DeSantis blew off criticism Wednesday that the state’s latest pop-up COVID-19 vaccine site was limited to residents of wealthy neighborhoods in Manatee County, including a senior community with family ties to a major DeSantis donor.

Can’t imagine why he’s testy. Not to be outdone, Politico Florida, had their beer held and also ran the wealth data for the zip codes, and one upped the Herald and Sentinel Democrat operatives. The result?

Follow Rod on Parler

Headline: “DeSantis defends opening vaccine pop-up site in affluent, mostly white community”

Lead: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis traveled Wednesday to an affluent, mostly white community in Manatee County to tout a pop-up vaccination site he said would make it easier for seniors there to get the shot.

(I’ve chosen not to link to the stories because I don’t want to drive traffic to these Democrat operative sites. However, if you want to read the screeds, just Google and headline and site and you will easily find the stories.)

Of course, there are more than 20 sites in Manatee County where people can get vaccines. And nationally, everyone is grappling with low vaccine rates among black Americans, which is in part because of the Tuskegee-driven distrust of vaccines, and a heightened sense of non-existent “systemic racism.”

No matter, it was another opportunity to attack DeSantis. The story has been picked up and run by newspapers across the nation, as the media worked in tandem to drive the story.

Then social media kicked in, and the hashtag #DeathSantis is trending as this is written. Of course, no fact checks or blocking there, just the full tripod of Democrats, media and social media working together to damage a leading Republican.

The irony is that the Florida vaccine rollout is going very well and Florida’s declining numbers continue to outperform the national average and other large states. By a lot. Florida is thriving under DeSantis’ leadership like no blue state. Therefore, DeSantis is a racist. Same old playbook. And not divisive at all.

The Capitol Riot And The Reichstag Fire: American Leftists And Nazis

By Rod Thomson

The history of the Reichstag fire and how it was used by the early German Nazis to crack down on their primary political opponents, German Communists, is eerily illustrative of the Capitol riot and following days.

The Reichstag was the building in which the German Diet, it’s parliament or Congress at the time, met before World War II. It was the Capitol building equivalent.

In 1933, as the Nazis were trying to consolidate their power, a fire destroyed a large part of the building. It was just the work of a handful of provocateurs, or possibly just one Dutchman. But the Nazis seized the opportunity and immediately began suspending civil liberties and cracking down on the German Communists.

The Reichstag fire and crackdown on political opponents was just weeks after Adolf Hitler won election as Chancellor of Germany. The Capitol riot and crackdown on political opponents was just weeks after Democrats won elections controlling Washington.

The Nazis did not crack down on the Communists in response to the fire. They had been wanting to eliminate the Communist voices for a while and they seized the Reichstag fire as the opportunity to do it.

Like on Instagram

As Wikipedia rightly explains: “The Nazi Party used the fire as a pretext to claim that communists were plotting against the German government, which made the fire pivotal in the establishment of Nazi Germany.”

FYI, turned out that the Nazi claim that the Communists were plotting against the German government was a lie. But truth doesn’t matter when an opportunity presents itself. This maxim was explained by Barack Obama’s Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, who, during the Great Recession in 2008, said “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.”

The American left in the media and Silicon tech oligarchs have been wanting to silence conservatives and Trump supporters for years now. They had slowly been banning the right from media platforms. There are very few token conservatives in mainstream news pages, and virtually no Trump supporters among hundreds and hundreds of opinionators. Monolithic. Social media had been de-platforming the outside edges of the movement and shadowbanning many who are in the mainstream of the right. It was a slow strangle.

But the Capitol riots presented the Reichstag opportunity to go for the jugular, starting with the stunning cutting off of the President of the United States from directly communicating with Americans, followed by deleting dozens of right-wing accounts and culminating with the complete take down of Parler. There is no way to believe this was not coordinated among the tech oligarchs who had to know they would be free to do so with Democrats in control now.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

The speed and coordination of this silencing by the American left would have been appreciated by the Nazis, though of course they would have gone further with violence.

In a short time after the Reichstag, the Communists were destroyed as a Nazi political opponent — killed, imprisoned or fleeing. Few on the American left advocate violence at this point, but silencing political opposition has been a necessary step of every authoritarian takeover.

The authoritarianism of the American left is on full marching display. Anyone who cannot see it simply does not want to, or is part of it. The left crushes dissent on religion, Trump support, election questioning, mis-gendering, support for Israel, immigration, and so on. They want to control and limit Americans’ most basic freedoms, and it appears they now have the means to.

When Germany, France, Norway, Australia, Mexico and the Russian opposition all condemn the social media silencing of the United States President and worry about their own free speech violating the whims of Silicon tech oligarchs, you know American Democrats are out of touch with basic American liberties. The deadly wrong side of history.

Those who are merely concerned about this moment, are not awake. If you are not angry and frightened, you are not awake. As the good German who was not a Nazi but looked away as things devolved, and the good Russian who was not a Stalinist, but looked the other way, there are too many good Americans looking the other way.

History will repeat itself in some fashion if we don’t see this dire threat. It already is under way.

The Final Attacks On Trump Are Aimed At Trump Supporters

By Rod Thomson

President Trump’s remarks last Thursday were everything anyone could want out of an American President following Wednesday’s Capitol mob. As presidential as presidential comes, as have been his following statements. Exactly what the coastal media glitterati have been clamoring for.

But it doesn’t mean a wit to the Democrat leaders and media howling for Trump’s head since November 2016, who even with only 12 days left in his presidency are screaming at the sky for impeachment or the 25th Amendment, completely out of touch with reality and certainly disconnected from what would be good for America. Healing? Please. What Democrat leaders ultimately still want is submission. Submission from Trump supporters. Submission from Republicans. Deleting President Trump’s personal Twitter and Facebook accounts started the wave of purges of conservatives on censor media platforms.

What is driving all of this is what is key. Sure, there is vitriolic hatred of Trump. But it always has been, and remains, a growing, deep disdain for the America that Trump and the emerging GOP represents. Working Americans. Middle class Americans. Traditionalist Americans. Religious Americans. Non-college Americans. Skilled trades Americans. Flyover Americans. Deplorables, in a word.

I know there are exceptions to this among my Democrat and media friends. And I still have many of both, though our divisions increase the strain and the tribalism. But those exceptions are among basic voters who are Democrat, not the hard-core Democrat and leadership. As it pertains to Democrat leadership in Washington, D.C., in the media, in academia, in Hollywood, in public education, in the permanent bureaucratic state.

It was the Democrat leadership in Congress that officially changed House rules to the most idiotic form of woke speech, eliminating all genders and replacing them with vomitous nonsense. From Aunt Mary to Parent’s Sibling Mary and so on. It was the same leadership that brought in a man who ended the opening Congressional session prayer with amen and awomen. My rank-and-file Democrat friends agreed those were stupid and wrong. But my friends are not Democratic leaders.

It’s the same leadership that still wants to institute the Green New Deal, which is a fantasy that would turn to a dystopian nightmare. Sheer insanity, unhinged from reality. This is not about tax rates or health care coverage or level of military spending or even abortion; those traditional differences between right and left. This is something terribly different from the Democratic Party.

That’s why the Democrat direction is more and more frequently associated with radical elitists, not regular Democrats, certainly not old-line Democrats. Trump represented the opposite of those elitist interests — and they despised him because of those he represents. “They” in this case are an amalgamation of the extremists like AOC, the power-crazed like Nancy Pelosi, the dishonest media and the entrenched permanent staters protecting their turf, such as James Comey and Andrew McCabe.

So the culmination at the Capitol is blamed by all those folks solely on Trump. But while his incautious language on the day of the event was not helpful, it was obviously not incitement. The reaction is so much bigger than Trump, and growing. But the incalculably damaging actions of a handful last week will allow Democrats and the media to ignore the underlying dynamic.

Trump realized it is bigger than him with his speech following the mob actino, which was pitch perfect and needed. But it is irrelevant because in the end, as we will see in coming months and years, it was never about Trump in the end. He was just the willing lightning rod.

None of the “elites” have made any attempt to understand what the hundreds of thousands of peaceful demonstrators last week represented. By Democrats and the media focusing on the few who acted illegally and should be prosecuted, just like BLM and Antifa should be — people that Democrats frequently defended — they will perpetuate the two Americas. Maybe that is actually what they want. I doubt it is what most Democrats want. I know it is not what Republicans want. But perhaps open warfare on the supporters of their political opponents is precisely their goal.

Learning no lessons, making no attempt to understand, will doom us to deepening the divides and repeating this terrible dynamic with worse and worse outcomes. Because they are not seeking unity or reconciliation in any way other than complete submission.

The New York Times Ignoring The Swalwell Scandal Explains The Problem

By Rod Thomson

When we talk about America increasingly becoming two nations, it’s not about race or income, it’s about competing information silos that have been driven by the media choosing to be the silo for one worldview and political side instead of fair, neutral information sources that can fuel the debates between worldviews. Race and income are simply topics within the separate silos.

The New York Times is the primary example of this as the nation’s most influential mainstream media organ. Most newspapers in some fashion follow the lead of the Times, giving it outsized influence beyond its gigantic digital presence. The Time’s coverage, or lack thereof, of the U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell scandal is an example of the daily fueling of the competing information silos that it participates in, even leads in.

Swalwell had a long relationship, probably intimate, with a Chinese spy called Fang Fang. These are not right-wing accusations. These are known facts from the FBI investigation of the spy. The FBI informed Swalwell about her and the California Congressman said he ended it immediately. But Swalwell led the charge against Trump on Russian collusion — from the House Intelligence Committee. That committee requires high clearance and gets high-level, classified documents.

This is a pretty big scandal, and once upon a time it would have been a juicy one. Swalwell ran for President and has been all over mainstream media news channels. This all has broken over the past month or so. But as is seen with the screenshot of a search for the number of New York Times stories on it in the past month, the media is ignoring it.

The newspaper that fancies itself as reporting “all the news that’s fit to print” found no news worth printing of a Chinese Communist spy sleeping with a high-level Congressman on the House Intelligence Committee.

Follow Rod on Parler

This is prima facia a major scandal from a high-profile member of Congress with a big juicy twist of hypocrisy, and the Times finds no news fit to print. In a very measurable way, there is actually more truth to the Swalwell scandal than to the literally thousands of stories the old gray lady did on Trump Russia collusion. The latter covered breathlessly never happened. The former is ongoing and remains ignored. This is, after all, what you would expect from Democrat communications operatives.

Most conservatives know about Swalwell’s Chinese spy scandal, because conservative media has been covering it. Readers of the Times? Nope. And so we have the two information silos driving Americans further apart based on information. If we live in a time of information warfare, this is certainly part of it.

The competing silos continue to feed the impossibility of having discussions or debates between right and left because both are operating from different sets of information. There is no common language of information to form discussions. It’s just a rat-a-tat-tat of righties firing off from our information silo and lefties firing off from theirs, and both assuming the other side is completely ignorant.

Like on Instagram

The fault for this mess falls squarely on the mainstream media, which, having abdicated all responsible coverage of events, simply cannot be trusted. They occasionally do some good stories, but they do a lot of Trump-Russia and non-Swalwell type reporting

So on any given day, you simply cannot trust them to be giving you the information you need. You can trust them to give you the Democratic talking points. Both sides can trust in that part. So if you’re a solid Democrat, they feed what you want to hear. If you’re a solid Republican, you recognize them as Democrat communication operatives.

And so more and more, the two Americas cannot even talk to each other.

China’s Facial Recognition AI Targeting Uighurs IS The Gestapo

By Rod Thomson

We’re hearing Gestapo thrown around a lot lately. It’s almost as though the legions of easily-propagandized ignorants wore out the constant mis-use of Nazi, Fascist and Hitler. Most of the Gestapo iterations of this are complete nonsense.

Most. Not all. The Chinese Communist government’s police state apparatus is the modern day equivalent of the Gestapo. A report leaked to the Washington Post shows that the Chinese Communist government has tested, and is presumably using, AI facial recognition software developed by Huawei to identify the Muslim ethnic minority of Uighurs and alert police — read, Gestapo. The Post story reports:

“The Chinese tech giant Huawei has tested facial recognition software that could send automated “Uighur alarms” to government authorities when its camera systems identify members of the oppressed minority group, according to an internal document that provides further details about China’s artificial-intelligence surveillance regime.

“A document signed by Huawei representatives — discovered by the research organization IPVM and shared exclusively with The Washington Post — shows that the telecommunications firm worked in 2018 with the facial recognition start-up Megvii to test an artificial-intelligence camera system that could scan faces in a crowd and estimate each person’s age, sex and ethnicity. If the system detected the face of a member of the mostly Muslim minority group, the test report said, it could trigger a ‘Uighur alarm’ — potentially flagging them for police in China, where members of the group have been detained en masse as part of a brutal government crackdown.”

Make no mistake. This is a high-tech yellow star, except instead of being physically pinned on Jews, it is digitally affixed to Uighurs — or those unfortunate enough to look Uighur. The Chinese government is on a determined genocidal mission to exterminate this minority as it continues to boot stomp other minorities and dissenters. The Chinese government is, at this point, the largest source of organized evil actions in the world.

President Trump broke with 40 years of American acquiescence to Chinese cruelty, expansionism, technology and patent theft, trade cheating and spying on U.S. companies and governments, all in return for cheap manufacturing labor. It had been a Faustian bargain for the U.S., particularly middle class, blue collar workers, innovators and patent-holders. Americans and the rest of the world had been paying for it.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

Trump was right to call out China, launch the trade wars that were bearing the fruit of better deals, push back on the expansionism and cut Huawei out of providing the U.S. 5G hardware. This latest revelation could hardly have made it more clear. He also unapologetically referred to them as Communists, which they are in repressive actions on a par with the Soviets.

But it looks like Trump will be leaving the White House and his successor, Joe Biden, has a frighteningly comfortable history dealing with the Chinese and quite possibly personally profiting from doing it. Biden has said he believes that a stronger China is good for the world — a mind-numbingly naive, or corrupt, take on this tyranny — and intends to roll back many of Trump’s policies dealing with this international scourge.

You can almost picture a mildly clueless Joe Biden standing in for another mildy clueless Western leader, Neville Chamberlain. After meeting with Herr Hitler in 1939, Chamberlain/Biden waive a piece of paper declaring peace in our times. It was a rueful mistake then, and it is a rueful one now. The devil’s due is frightful to consider.

Follow Rod on Parler

There had been some bipartisan support developing for stronger dealings with China than pre-Trump, but given the level of Trump animosity that has left much of American progressivism incapable of rational thought, and Biden’s predilection to go soft on the Beijing killers, there is a real threat that once again they will be loosed.

An aggressively expansionist, spying everywhere China and a nuclearized Iran — another distinct possibility under Biden unless Israel militarily intervenes — would create a much more dangerous world than Biden is inheriting from Trump.

Era Of The Great Fawning Has Begun

By Rod Thomson

The attack dogs are being put back into the Obama hibernation chambers and the dutiful lapdogs are back out, gently placed on the blanketed lap of Joe Biden and the puppeteers running him.

Let the era of the Great Fawning begin.

An Associated Press article was representative of the media coverage of Joe Biden’s pick for White House Chief of Staff, Ron Klain, describing his “gilded resume,” reporting that he has surprisingly “drawn praise from both sides of the ideological divide.” He’s just that good, darn it!

This is one part opinion, one part just flat wrong, all parts unfeigned Democratic operative PR. Get used to it. This will be the norm with the Biden coverage. No longer will you see the currently omnipresent phrase “without evidence” used with President Trump, a standard never before applied to presidents although it sure could have been with Obama, and likely all of them.

The opinion part is that his resume is “gilded” and a tremendous advancement over the outsider know-nothing rubes that Trump hired. Here is the actual lead:

“Ron Klain has checked all the boxes of a classic Washington striver: Georgetown, Harvard Law, Supreme Court clerk and Capitol Hill staffer, White House adviser and, along the way, of course, lobbyist and lawyer.”

Classic Washington striver with “deep knowledge” and “competence” the media assures us. But to 74 million Americans, probably more, it sounds a lot more like another Washington insider sucking off the bloated teets of the federal government for personal enrichment and who doesn’t know or care a rat’s rear-end about middle America. They are literally describing what we would think of as the ultimate swamp creature, but I doubt they even know it, the disconnection is so complete.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

But hey, that is their partisan opinion. It’s still a free country, partially, sort of, for the moment. But it’s labeled straight news — which makes it deceitful, at best, just a lie at worst. Completely untrustworthy, as every poll shows the American public finds the media. Does the media writ large even care about its trustworthiness with its consumers anymore? Or is it the agenda uber alles?

And then there is just the factually untrue.

The evidence they cite for “drawing praise from both sides of the ideological divide”? Well none effectively. No elected Republican is quoted in Washington or elsewhere. Not one. Not even Mitt Romney. Only talk show host Hugh Hewitt tweeted that Klain was a good pick because Klain took pandemics from foreign nations seriously years ago. No matter. Still counts.

Follow Rod on Parler

The whole piece is a laundry list of leftist leaders, including Obama minion, or puppeteer, depending on who you believe, Valeri Jarrett, heaping praise on Klain along with AOC and other leftist radicals applauding the pick in the lapdog PR story. But hey, a talk show guy tweeted something positive, so…bipartisan support!

Like I said. Get used to the partisan fawning. Or move on from the mainstream media. But remember, they still hold enormous influence in this country, pretty much for worse, so they cannot just be discarded as irrelevant. They must be exposed as the partisan operatives they have become.

How To Beat Homelessness: Sarasota, Florida vs. Los Angeles, California

By Rod Thomson

It seems like a strange matchup, a midsize community against one of the world’s great cities — or once great cities. Other than being in the United States and never seeing snow, there are not a lot of similarities between Los Angeles and Sarasota, Florida.

Except about 10 years ago, they both, like most American cities, were facing an increasing homeless problem. The warmth of southern cities, particularly Florida cities, is a major attraction for everyone, and as it turns out there are homeless snowbirds, of a sort.

But Sarasota and L.A. took two opposite paths in dealing with the problem. L.A., like many progressive cities, turned to a mix of homelessness or housing as a human right and pursued a “housing first” concept. Any program that got keys into the hands of the homeless quickly under “rapid housing” was pursued with gushers of taxpayer money — without regard to what had caused people to become homeless in the first place.

At the same time, those progressive cities — San Francisco, Portland and Seattle stand out with L.A. but there are many others — hamstrung attempts by law enforcement and business owners to remove the homeless from badgering patrons and threatening people or just urinating or defecating at their front door. “Homelessness is not a crime!” they cried emotionally. But what they meant was that the homeless committing crimes was not a crime.

We’ve all seen the results of these policies. Massive tent cities in L.A. where the homeless population is estimated to be 80,000 strong and is one of many factors contributing to people fleeing the once City of Angels. They have swelled into the suburbs, too, leaving fewer people feeling safe if they don’t live behind walled mansions with armed guards, such as the Hollywood elite who, bubbled away from impact on themselves, self-righteously push for the destructive progressive policies.

Like Rod’s new Youtube channel

Sarasota took a different approach, one advocated by Robert Marbut, a consultant at the time he was hired by Sarasota in 2013, and who was later tapped by President Donald Trump to be the executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness — the homelessness czar.

Sarasota officials — and importantly, private institutions and organizations — followed many, not all, of Marbut’s advice to target the root cause of the homeless, seeing the homelessness as a symptom of a deep underlying problem with the individuals that normally falls into the categories of drug and alcohol addiction and mental health issues. This is undeniably true.

Statistics are notoriously tricky on the homeless for obvious reasons. But numerous studies have found that somewhere between 20 and 40 percent of all homeless people have a severe mental illness, while another 15 to 40 percent suffer from chronic substance abuse. Large percentages also have spent significant time in prison and many have a disability. Despite these ranges, it’s easy to see that the vast majority of homeless people are not those who were “down on their luck” but otherwise fine, they lost their job and were evicted.

That’s why attacking those foundational causes of homeless is the only realistic and compassionate long-term solution.

So the Sarasota community, both the city and county working together, got rid of the homeless camps that had sprouted up, pursued treatment programs and ensured interagency cooperation that is often lacking, making sure the homeless received help with their underlying problems, their root causes, and then got help getting back on their feet with training and housing.

The Gulf Coast Community Foundation and other nonprofits in the Sarasota region work closely with the Sarasota County School District to make sure young people and their families get connected with social services and housed quickly while often requiring treatment of the underlying problems. Marbut calls this work the “most innovative youth programming in America.”

The result is that the Sarasota area’s “unsheltered homeless” population — those who do not have a permanent residence but are in shelters or other facilities — has fallen almost in half in the past four years.

It shows on the streets. Downtown Sarasota, considered one of the most thriving mid-sized downtowns in the country, was dealing with constant homeless problems a decade ago. It was the top story and the biggest issue for downtown business establishments. But it rarely makes any news now.

Like everywhere, Sarasota still has to deal with groups that the media likes to call “homeless advocates,” but which actually end up advocating for people being homeless through their poorly thought-out solutions. But the public sees the results. It is hard to argue with success. Treat the underlying causes of homelessness, not the symptom, through cooperative programs linking public and private agencies, schools and law enforcement. Common sense again offers up the best solution.

“Twice in the last week, when asked where is the best program in the country, I said Sarasota, Florida,” Marbut said recently.

Florida Democratic Party Is In Meltdown Mode After Election Rout

By Rod Thomson

No less a non-conservative authority than Politico has labeled the Florida Democratic Party in “post-election meltdown” after a complete beatdown by the Florida GOP in the Nov. 3 election. It’s so bad that Democrats are seriously worried that Florida has become a permanently red state.

Politico led their story this way:

“It wasn’t just one bad cycle. For Democrats in Florida, Election Day 2020 was a tipping point in a long, painful buildup to irrelevancy. After suffering crushing losses from the top of the ballot down, the state party now is mired in a civil war that could have profound consequences for future elections.”

That does not overstate it. In a year when Democrats had hoped to pick up 5-10 seats in the Florida House and three seats in the Senate and maybe flip the Florida statehouse for the first time in 20 years with the help of tens of millions of dollars poured in from outside Florida, the exact opposite happened. Florida Republicans expanded their state Senate majority by one seat and our state House majority by five seats while also flipping two Congressional seats and giving President Trump a four times larger margin of victory than he had in 2016.

Tellingly, Miami-Dade County led the dramatic flip. Hillary Clinton won the county by almost 300,000 votes in 2016, Joe Biden won it by only 85,000 — just 7 percent compared to Clinton’s 29 percent margin. That’s also where the two Congressional seats were located. But all of this is only continuing the reddening of Florida.

Florida Democrats in the 1980s had a nearly one-million voter registration lead. When Barack Obama won Florida in 2008, their voter registration lead was still nearly 500,000. When President Donald Trump was elected in 2016, Democrats’ lead had narrowed to 327,000. During the 2018 midterms, the Democrat gap was down to 263,000 and by the Nov. 3 election this year, Republicans had narrowed that gap to 134,000 registered voters.

The gains have not been just the red areas getting redder than the blue areas got blue. It’s all areas getting redder. In most major urban counties, Republicans continue to close the gap, albeit slowly. Pinellas County, where St. Pete is located and the Tampa Bay Rays play, flipped to a GOP-majority county three years ago and now has an 11,000-voter registration advantage. Gaps were closed in Hillsborough (Tampa), Seminole Orange (Orlando) Miami-Dade and West Palm Beach, also. And more than 20 mostly rural counties have flipped from blue to red in the past decade.

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Joe Gruters has successfully made voter registration one of his top priorities. It continues to pay off as most observers give the Florida GOP the chance to finally and for the first time ever become the majority party in the state by voter registration. Given Republicans’ higher voter turnout rates, that’s an even bigger problem for Democrats.

The idea that Florida could become — or has become — a huge, electoral-rich red state like Texas to counterbalance California and New York in that column for team blue, gives national Democrats heartburn. If Florida is not a 50-50 swing state, that increases the must-win states for Democrats, narrowing the path each election cycle.

For Florida Democrats, staring down the barrel of permanent minority status, it is a near-existential crisis in which they now enter a fight for identity. It’s worth watching because the Democrat Party in Florida mirrors Democrats nationally — in large part because Florida attracts people from all over the U.S. and — for better or worse — they bring their politics to the Sunshine State.

From the AOC-Socialist wing to the moderate wing represented by state Sen. Jason Pizzo, who said in frustration after the election, “I’m not a f—ing socialist.” The angst is palpable as recriminations for Nov. 3 fly and there is no clear Democratic leader in the state. Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo is dead in the water, but interestingly, until just Tuesday when former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz jumped in with Michael Bloomberg’s support, no one had thrown their hat in the ring. That no one was itching to do so, simply reveals more of the disarray.

All of which continues to strengthen Florida Republicans. Gruters and Governor Ron DeSantis will push to overtake the Democrats in registration in time for DeSantis’ re-election in 2022.
